Soil Protection and Rehabilitation For Food Security

CREADIS / Soil Protection and Rehabilitation For Food Security

Project funded by GIZ through GFA who further subcontracted Community Research in Environment and Development Initiatives (CREADIS) as a Local Subsidy.

Project Goal

To reduce soil degradation, increase agricultural production, improve climate change adaptation through soil protection and rehabilitation measures (Conservation Agriculture, Push-pull technology, Agro-forestry, integrated Soil Fertility and Pest Management, Soil and Water Conservation and Good Agronomic Practices)in the three counties of Bungoma, Kakamega and Siaya.

Project Objectives

  • Train farmers on good agricultural practices to increase productivity.
  • Equip farmers with technical skills through theoretical and practical training to increase food production for food security.
  • Train farmers on soil protection and rehabilitation of depleted soil to keep safe and healthy soils for improved productivity.

Target Group

The project targets small holder farmers at Mayanja and Marakaru Sublocations at Tuuti/Marakaru Ward. At each sub location, 600 farmers are recruited in groups of 25 farmers. Each Sub location has 24 groups of 25 farmers each. Thus at Ward level 1200 farmers have been recruited.

Key Activities: Training farmers on climate smart technologies: Soil and Water Conservation, Integrated Soil Fertility Management, Integrated Pest Management, Agro-forestry, Conservation Agriculture and Good Agronomic Practices.

Duration of the Program: Contractual after 6 months.

Numbers so far reached: Total of 1734, (Males=718, Females=1016, Youths=625).
